Evaristo do Espírito Santo Carvalho, a Sao Tome citizen, born in October 1941, in Santana, Cantagalo District, São Tomé and Príncipe.

At the age of 16, in 1957, he completed the General Course of the Lyceums. For over two decades he has worked in the fields of Administration, Agriculture, Agronomic Research Programs and the courts.


From 1976 to 1985, under the aegis of the International Labor Organization, he attended the modular course on leadership for the African Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP) in Switzerland, Brazil and Cape Verde. Attending also in the period in allusion, Courses of Social Sciences and Administrative Manager and a course of Management, Financial Administration, Patrimonial and Human Resources.

He has extensive professional experience in the field of Public Administration and Administration and in the field of agricultural policies and programs, having worked for many years with Portuguese experts in agricultural development programs. He also has knowledge and experience of the Judicial System and has served as Ombudsman, equivalent to the Attorney General of the Republic. He exerted political activities of protonationalism to the independence of Sao Tome and Principe and from the beginnings of this one, exerts political and governmental functions that culminated with his inauguration in the position of Head of State and President of the Republic on September 3, 2016. Worthy of mention is , also his political-party experience and his mastery over matters relating to the management and operation of the Sao Tome Parliament.


September 2016 to date: President of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe; from 2010 to 2012 he was the President of the National Assembly; 2001-2002: he served as Prime Minister of the Government of the Presidential Initiative; 1997-2001, Cabinet Director of the President of the Republic; 1994-1995, Prime Minister of the Government of the Presidential Initiative; 1992-1994, Minister of Defense and Internal Order; 1991-1992, Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic; from 1986-1988 he held the position of Ombudsman equivalent to the Attorney General of the Republic; 1978-1980, Minister of Construction, Transport and Communications; 1977-1978: Secretary of State for Territorial Administration; 1976-1977, Director General of Agriculture; 1975-1977, Director of the Office of the President of the Republic; 1974-1975, Director of Cabinet of the Prime Minister and Head of Transitional Government; of 1975-1984, Member of the National Assembly; from 1991-1993, Member of the National Assembly.
